Astrology is the art of using astronomical phenomena as tools for predicting earthly and human events as well as the behaviour of people born at particular places and times. Since the dawn of civilization, people have been fascinated with the stars in the night sky. In its infancy, astrology was simply the association of omens read from the sky. As civilization progressed, astronomers constructed a more complex picture of the heavens, and a more formal version of astrology was born. At the outset, astrology and astronomy were nearly interchangeable terms, but astronomy has diverged as the science concerned with the study of the positions and physical properties of the celestial bodies. Modern astrology has its roots in ancient Babylonia and Egypt. Astrology spread to China, India, and Greece. The earliest known horoscope incorporating the principles of mature astrology dates to about 409 BC. Ptolemy, the Greek astronomer authored the Almagest and the Tetrabiblos which were influential works that summarized and extended the existing astronomical and astrological knowledge of his times.

The zodiac signs used in astrology represent the annual cycle of the sun as it is passes through constellations during the course of the year. The zodiac is divided into 12 equal sections named for the constellations that occupied them during ancient times (aries, taurus, gemini, cancer, leo, virgo, libra, scorpio, sagittarius, capricorn, aquarius, and pisces). Each constellation was regarded as being ruled by a particular "planet" (although some planets ruled more than one constellation). Each of the 12 zodiac signs are supposed to be associated with parts of the human body and the four classical Greek elements (earth, air, fire, and water). The particular positions of planets in the heavens can lead to either strong or weak influences on people's lives. The birth or sun sign used in most horoscopes, is the sign of the zodiac that the sun was located when a person was born. A person born at the time of the change of one sun sign to the next is said to be on the cusp. The heavens are also divided into 12 sections called houses. Unlike the zodiac signs, which represent the annual cycle of the sun, the houses reflect the earth's daily rotation in relation to the belt of constellations. Each house is responsible for certain human characteristics or aspects of experience such as romance, travel, health, and thought. Every place and time on earth has a unique view of the houses. Detailed horoscopes are typically constructed by interpreting a natal (birth) chart that diagrams the positions of the heavenly bodies and the orientations of the houses at the exact time and place of a person's birth.
